How to Clean a Copper Water Bottle

Last updated: October 13, 2026. By Neera Living.

To wash a copper water bottle, rinse it with warm water after the last sip each day and let it air-dry upside down with the cap off. Every week or two, clean the inside with 1 tablespoon of lemon juice, 1 teaspoon of salt and a splash of warm water: swirl for about 2 minutes, then rinse until the water runs clear. Use the bottle only for plain still water, never acidic, sparkling or hot drinks. Wondering about daily use? See is it safe to drink from a copper bottle every day.

How to clean the inside of a copper water bottle

  1. Add 1 tablespoon of lemon juice and 1 teaspoon of salt to the bottle.
  2. Pour in a splash of warm water.
  3. Swirl it around the inside for about 2 minutes.
  4. Pour it out and rinse with plain water until it runs clear.
  5. Let the bottle air-dry upside down with the cap off.

Soap is not needed. If you prefer it, a drop of mild dish soap is fine; rinse well.

How to clean the outside of a copper bottle

Dip half a lemon in salt and rub the surface, following the hammer marks. Rinse, then dry with a soft cloth. The copper brightens within minutes. If you prefer the deeper tone of aged copper, simply skip this step - both looks are normal.

Daily care

  • Fill with plain still water at room temperature or cool. Tap, filtered or still mineral water are all fine.
  • Very soft, distilled or reverse-osmosis water draws more copper from bare metal. If you use it, drink the water within 8 to 12 hours.
  • Fill in the evening and drink it the next day. Do not keep the same water longer than 24 hours, and do not top up old water with new. More on timing: how long water can sit in a copper bottle.
  • After the last sip, rinse with warm water and run a bottle brush through once. Let the bottle air-dry upside down with the cap off.
  • After hours in a hot car or in direct sun, pour out the warm water and refill.

How to clean a copper water bottle before first use

Rinse the inside with warm water. Do one lemon-and-salt wash inside and out, then rinse until the water runs clear. Fill with plain water, let it stand 6 to 8 hours and pour that first fill out. A new, freshly polished surface gives off more copper and a stronger taste than a settled one. From the second fill on, drink as usual.

Why is my copper bottle turning dark or green?

Darkening is normal. Bare copper reacts with air and water and slowly forms a brown, darker patina, inside and out. It is the sign of bare copper, not damage, and your regular lemon-and-salt clean brings the shine back.

Green or blue spots are copper reacting with acid or moisture - a sign of real copper, not mold. They form when acid or trapped moisture sits on the copper. Common causes are juice or lemon water in the bottle, or putting it away wet. If you see them, pour the water out, clean with lemon and salt, rinse until the water runs clear and dry before the next fill. Every color explained: why a copper bottle turns black or green inside.

Why does my water taste metallic?

Some people notice a faint copper taste even in plain water. A clear metallic or bitter taste usually comes from an acidic or hot drink, water left too many hours, very soft or reverse-osmosis water, a bottle due for its lemon-and-salt clean, or a brand-new bottle. Pour that water out and refill with plain still water.

How often should you clean a copper water bottle?

Rinse it every day. Give it a lemon-and-salt clean every week or two, or whenever the copper darkens more than you like or you notice green spots.

What to avoid

  • Lemon water, juice, coffee, tea, sparkling water, sports drinks, milk or anything hot. Lemon and salt are only for cleaning and are rinsed away.
  • The dishwasher, scouring pads and metal brushes.
  • The fridge and the freezer. Keep the bottle at room temperature: condensation from the fridge leaves moisture on the copper, and freezing water can deform the bottle.

Caring for the cap and inner seal

Close the cap snugly, not hard; the inner seal does the work. After washing, rinse the cap threads too, wipe the seal dry and store the cap off the bottle so both dry fully.
